TEMPO Interactive, Yogyakarta:Gadjah Mada University (UGM) will send its Disaster Early Response Unit (DERU) to Wasior, West Papua, next week. The team, comprising experts in geology, social psychology, and health will be there for one week to estimate the post-disaster needs.
“The team will consist of no more than 10 people,” said DERU Chief, Dr Slamet Widianto, yesterday.
According to Prof Ir Dwikorita Karnawati, UGM Professor in Technical Geology Faculty, the Wasior floods are a natural cycle. “The flooding there happens regularly because the land forms an alluvial fan formation,” she explained.
Participating in the team will be Dr Rachmat Hidayat, a lecturer at UGM’s Faculty of Psychology. Based on DERU’s analysis, although the number of victims is low, the psychological effects of the Wasior flooding is the same as that following the 2004 Aceh tsunami. “The post-disaster trauma is a long-term danger because it can upset social activities,” Rachmat said.

There have been two many teams sent to Wasior by either the government of Indonesia or institution like UGM, already. The most important thing is that they are coordinated and their mission sould be to help the victims, not to "look" for other things.
