Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih said here Tuesday that the medical supplies for Wasior flood victims were enough and secured.

Therefore, the residents of the devastated Wasior town in Teluk Wondama, West Papua Province,
need not worry, she said.

"The medical supplies in Wasior are still sufficient, and the health workers have even sprayed disinfectants to halt the spread of diseases," she said.In anticipating such ailments as diarrhea and respiratory infections, she said the health ministry had provided the locals with medical supplies.

The latest report from health workers in Wasior said that the sanitation had been under control after the spraying of disinfectants there, she said.

These efforts could minimize the sources of post-flooding diseases. "Sanitation remains under our constant surveillance," she said.

The health ministry`s team members and local health workers kept maintaining effective coordination with the National Disaster Agency officials in the flood-hit areas, Endang said.

The Wasior flash flood, which struck on Sunday and Monday (Oct. 3 and 4), had reportedly killed at least 124 people, and left 123 others still missing.

Wasior was covered with mud, logs and rocks following the flood. The town badly needs heavy equipment for evacuation and cleaning operations.

The deadly disaster has encouraged the central government and various elements in the society to assist the victims.

A group of journalists in the South Sulawesi capital of Makassar was among those who showed their deep sympathy to the flood victims by raising relief funds on Saturday.

Wasior Fund Raising Coordinator Andi Hajrah Murni said those who wanted to donate could do so by filling donation boxes that the voluntary journalists put in a number of places in Makassar.

Indonesia`s Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) had also deployed its medical team to assist the victims.

Coordinating Minister for People`s Welfare Agung Laksono had also visited the flood-hit area over the weekend, along with Social Affairs Minister Salim Segaf Al Jufri.

In helping the Wasior flood victims, the government had extended Rp2.5 billion in cash for emergency response efforts. The money was brought to Wasior by both ministers during their visit to Wasior.

The funds could be used to reduce the burden of the flood victims and the refugees during the emergency response period, Agung said.

The emergency response would last for 14 days until October 18, 2010.

The flash flood has not only caused lots of families to lose their loved ones but also caused injury to 853 people and forced 4,625 others move to safer places.  (*)
